Welcome!
STUDENTS! PARENTS! HISTORY NERDS! Welcome to Mr. Atcheson's History Blog. This site was created initially as a spot to showcase the works of my World Geography and American History Classes. I will continue to maintain the site to provide parents, students and anyone interested with a glimpse into my history classes. This will be a place to reference for certain homework assignments, showcase student work, discuss current and classroom events and also as a supplement for parents. Enjoy!

Article 2--The Changing Face of Classroom Technology
I think this article can best be summed up paraphrasing a quote from the article. A teacher talks about no longer holding a child's hand through their education, but because of technology they are now "holding the flashlight". This is a great summation of technology's role in facilitating learning rather than being the core of it. One educator spoke of using technology to cover the same old material in a new way. I think that's the best way to put it. Kids don't want to read through books and take notes from a blackboard. Students want to be stimulated and they want to be up and doing something. Technology allows students this opportunity. Students don't want to be led by the nose through lectures and told what to do. Kids want the opportunity to learn for themselves, but first teachers must package content in formats that pique a student's intrinsic motivation. Judging by the availability and use of iPods, DVDs, internet and cell phones, I would have to agree that the way to a student's mind is through technology.

I agree with what you are saying about Students are now submerged into technology unlike thier teachers. In order to reach students we must pique thier interest and keep things exciting. I am in full agreement to that, but what if your school can't fund that technology, what if your teachers are not educated to use that technology and your school doesn't fund workshops for that?
Play the other side, what is wrong with a pencil and paper? Is there something terribly wrong with they way we were taugh? I remember sitting through lectures taking notes, taking test in Blue Books. Just becaue we have technology, does that mean we have to use it?
Jordan,
I also agree with your belief that technology is the way to go for the future. Students today want to be "entertained" and I don't mean with video games. They are accustomed to learning at home through the use of internet sites, games, and even educational computer animated television programs.
In education, many things will change over time, and I feel that we, as teachers, are going to have to adjust our teachings to the changes. Implementing technology in the classroom is a great start in terms of adjusting to a change.
Technology has our students “ear” so to speak right now and we must take advantage of that. We as teachers are always trying to find ways to get our material to our students and technology is a huge thing to our students today. With this schools must be willing to financially make a commitment to make it possible for us to fully take advantage of technology in the classroom. I have been lucky enough to have a great amount of technology in my classroom and students love the changes that we are able to make.
